Jesse H. Higgins, 78, of Longwood, Fla., formerly of Oblong and Springfield, died Monday at Lucerne Hospital in Orlando, Fla. He was born in Jasper County, the son of James William and Lucy Hadley Higgins, and married Eunice Ridlen in 1923.

Mr. Higgins was the owner of a shoe store in Oblong for several years. He was elected in 1940 to the Illinois Legislature, where he served two terms as a state representative and was then executive secretary to the Illinois Petroleum Institute in Springfield before his retirement.

Mr. Higgins was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Springfield, Elks Lodge in Robinson, Willow Hill Lodge AF & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Ansar Shrine in Springfield.

Surviving are his wife, Eunice; one son, Kenneth; one sister, Mrs. Rolla (Flossie) Cramer of Newton; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Services at Pulliam Funeral Home in Oblong. Burial will be Mound Cemetery in Jasper County.
