Obituary From "The Ottumwa Courier," July 10, 2021:

Duane Gates

OTTUMWA - Duane Craig Gates, 71 of Ottumwa, IA lost his seven-year battle with cancer and met his heavenly Father July 8, 2021 surrounded by family at his home.

Duane was born June 12, 1950 to Harvey Gates and Helen Goode Gates in Ottumwa, IA. Duane is the second eldest of six children.

He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1969 and continued his education at Iowa Tech where he graduated with a degree in auto body. Duane married the love of his life, Neta Kay Talbert, February 6, 1972 at Blakesburg Christian Church. Together they were blessed with 4 amazing children.

Duane found his calling to help others as a teenager repairing automobiles. As the youngest owner/operator of a Standard Oil service station, he opened Duane's Standard, in 1972, located on the corner of Madison and Mary Streets in Ottumwa. Later moving his business to a station on Church St, he added a used car lot as well as towing services, currently known as Duane's Towing. He took pride in never refusing to help someone in need and assuring they were taken care of. He operated Duane's Towing with his son, Bryan, who is now the owner of the business. After 49 years of hard work, Duane completed his final call in May 2021.

Duane enjoyed watching Hawkeye football and basketball, attending car shows, and bicycling during his free time. He loved God and was a member at Bible Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Neta and four children, Chad (Vicky) Gates of Oskaloosa, Bryan Gates of Ottumwa, Derek (Claudia) Gates of Ottumwa, and Carissa (Matt) Smith of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Auston, Carter, Mya, and Ryder; two brothers, Greg Gates of Burlington and Kurt (Cindi) Gates of Ottumwa; a sister, Debbie (Mark) Lewis of Bend, OR; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Gates and Kathy Gates both of Ottumwa; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Duane was preceded in death by his mother and father, as well as two brothers, Bill Gates and Van Gates.

Visitation will be open at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 11th at Reece Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 12th at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Ed Matthews officiating. For those unable to attend the service, it may be viewed on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bible Baptist Church.
