BLUEFLELD-Lowell Winfred ‘Tuffy' Abel, 65, of Rt. 3 Box 212 (BIuewell), Bluefield, died on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 at Bowman Gray Hospital in Winston Salem, N.C.
Born Oct. 21, 1935, in Jenkinjones, he was the son of the late Rufus L. Abel and Mary D. Hill Abel.
Mr. Abel had been a resident of Bluewell for 35 years and was a heavy equipment operator for Peny & Hylton of Beckley. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Bramwell and Green Valley, member of the Teamsters Union, tractor trailer driver and a member of the U.M.W.A. He was a member of the Bramwell United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Roselee Pratt and Lois Crist.
Survivors include daughter, Suzanne Kelley and husband, Kevin of Bluewell; son, Lowell Keith Abel and wife, Tammy of Bluefield, Va.; fiancee, Norma Harless of Bluefield; sisters, Cleo Vasvary and husband, Sherman of Lakeland, Fla. and Jeanette Goins and husband, Bill of Elkhart, md.; three grandchildren, Klint and Kristin Kelley, and Andrew Abel; and step grandson, Christopher Puckett.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bramwell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Duncan officiating. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Mausoleum, Bluewell.
The family will receive friends at the Cravens Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell from 6 9 p.m. Sunday. Friends may also call at the church one hour prior to services on Monday.
The Sandy River District American Legion Post #175 and Mercer County Veterans Council will conduct Military graveside rites.
Roger Goins, Bruce Thompson, Donnie Goins, Doug Cook, Darrell Cook and David Cook will serve as pallbearers.
Dwight Hill, Howard Goins, Dean Goins, Junior (loins, Randall Compton, Randall Thompson, ‘Bo' James (loins and members of the Kiwanis Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bramwell United Methodist Church.
