Asbury was born on the family farm one mile southwest of Bellfountain. He was named for two Methodist bishops by his father, who was a pioneer preacher. In 1878 he married Carrie Tharp, and the two of them moved to a different part of the family property. He continued the family business of raising fine cattle, sheep, and horses. They had one son, Philip Ray, and one daughter, Joy. His obituary was published in The Oregonian on May 16, 1935.
