Obituary Below:

Josephine Culotta Jovings passed away peacefully on July 15 at her home at the age of 96.

Born in 1925 in the upstairs apartment of her family's grocery store in downtown Birmingham, Josephine was the second youngest of 10 children born to Rosa Maranto Culotta and Nicolo (Sam) Rosario Culotta. Both of her parents immigrated to Birmingham from Cefalu, Sicily.

She graduated from Woodlawn High School and in 1950 married her beloved husband, Jackie L. Jovings.

She loved being around people and socializing – a classic extrovert. She worked for a time at The Adorable Shop at Five Points West and her husband belonged to the Birmingham Fraternal Council of Clubs through which she and Jackie attended weekly lead outs and dances at the Cloud Room at Cascade Plunge. Cooking and keeping everyone fed was one of her primary concerns. Already well into her 60s, Josephine started the cafeteria at Bruno Montessori School, where her grandson was in school at the time, in large part to ensure everyone was eating properly and to keep socially active. She was a long-time member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and was devoted to her faith.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jackie L. Jovings; her parents; her sisters, Rose Meshotto, Sadye C. Rocha, Lena Lucy Culotta, and Constance F Culotta; and her brothers Joseph A. Culotta, Jake R. Culotta, Sr., Dominic J. Culotta, and 2 brothers who died in early childhood.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Rose Jovings Gray; her grandson, Jack Gray (Ginger); and 3 great-grandchildren, John Bennett Gray, Charlotte Josephine Gray, and David Ellis Gray.

She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother and a fun neighbor and friend. Special thanks to her caregivers, Georgia Daniels, De Oliver, Fannie McCall, Tonya Williams, Jessica Hines, and Shirley Garrett, all of whom showed Josephine the utmost compassion and patience.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at Prince of Peace Catholic Church on July 19 at 11:00 A.M. with visitation starting at 10:00 A.M. in the church. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Vincent's Foundation – NICU or Prince of Peace Catholic Church.
