He was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the son of Ralph Davis Jr. and Geneva (Reed) Petticrew. He attended school in Denton, Texas, and graduated from Garland High School, in Texas, in the class of 1967. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and served for four years, most of which was served on the USS John F. Kennedy. While in the military, he also attended Old Dominion College in Norfolk, Va. After his discharge he attended North Texas State University, in Denton, Texas, and then re-enlisted in the Navy for another two years and was stationed on the island of Guam, where he also taught English to Vietnameese refugees. After his military duty, he returned to the Ashland area where his parents were living and helped his father with the construction of a log home for the family on their property. During this time he attended East Central University in Ada. In 1983, he began his career with the state of Louisiana, where he was the Disabled Veterans Representative. He also presented seminars at Fort Polk, La, training veterans returning to the work force after their military careers. He was a former resident of McAlester that died in Opelousas, Louisiana at the age of 55.
