Paul Israel passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 18, 2007, at the age of 77. Paul was born on October 27, 1930, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, to Edward Christian Israel and Hazel Troy Israel. He moved to Lake Jackson in 1952 after serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Paul was a proud veteran and is a life member of the American Legion Andy Brannen Post 306.

Paul Israel dedicated his life to serving his family and his community. He was a member of the Lake Jackson Volunteer Fire Department for 42 years, serving as Fire Chief for 30 years and as the city's first Fire Marshal for 18 years. He was a member of the State and International Fire Chiefs and Fire Marshals Associations and served as an instructor at the Texas A&M Fire Training School for 34 years. Following his "retirement" in 1996, he devoted much of his time and energy to developing and maintaining the Israel-Setzer Fire Field in Angleton, continuing to instruct municipal and corporate firefighters in the profession that he dearly loved. Paul was well-known for his home fire safety program, "Fire Prevention Lake Jackson Style," which he taught to local school children, and then to the same children later in life as adults in the community. His presentations always were informative and entertaining, and he never passed up an opportunity to embarrass members of the audience, particularly his children. He had an infallible spirit and a quick wit sure to make you smile. He was a man of few words with a heart of gold. He dedicated his life to unselfishly serving others.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Troy Israel and Kent Israel.

Paul is survived by his wife, Mary Helen Israel of Lake Jackson; son, Chris Israel of College Station; daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Keith Matzke of Lake Jackson; daughter, Stephanie Israel of Cedar Park; and his beloved grandchildren, Tasha and Tina Israel, and Emily and Blake Matzke. Paul and Mary Helen would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 19, 2007.

Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church in Lake Jackson on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. A celebration of Paul's life will be held at First United Methodist Church in Lake Jackson at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, with interment to follow at Restwood Memorial Park.

Paul would be honored if you chose to make memorial contributions to either the Texas A&M Fire Instructors Memorial Fund, First United Methodist Church of Lake Jackson or the charity of your choice.
