Ruler of the Ottoman Empire. He ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1876 until he was deposed in 1909. He was most noted for improving the police force, introducing new commercial and penal laws, and introducing the post of Attorney general. Under his rule many new industries were created and the debt to foreign countries was reduced by 20 million pieces of gold. Model farms were created and many new schools and colleges were created that are still in operation. He was deposed in 1909 and exiled to Salonica. When Salonica came under a threat of invasion he was moved back to Istanbul where he died. He was 74 at the time of his death and even his greatest adversaries wept at his funeral.
