First Lieutenant Bacon was the pilot of U.S. Army Air Corps B-26 Marauder #40-1410. While on an equipment and systems testing flight out of Wright-Patterson Field, the bomber crashed at North Hampton, Ohio. Investigation would reveal that one of the pilots' escape hatch covers separated in flight, struck a propeller, then was thrown into the tail section, shearing parts of the elevator and rudder, causing the aircraft to spiral out of control. This would be the first in a long series of fatal accidents involving early production models of the twin engine Martin bombers caused by this manner.

All three airmen aboard perished. The other men were:

2nd Lt. James P Lynch, Co-pilot
S/Sgt. Edgar E Johnson, Engineer
