It is believed that David, Permelia and their five children moved from the Ashe/Surry County area of North Carolina to Rhea County, Tennessee in the spring of 1860 based on the belief that the youngest child, Rachel was born in North Carolina about December 1859/January 1860 and they were enumerated in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census on 30 June 1860 in Rhea County.

With the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War, David Martin Landreth was appointed to the Home Guard of Minute Men (Confederate) for District 5, Rhea County, Tennessee. David and his family abandoned their home in Rhea County and became refugees from the war, reaching St. Louis on or about 20 March 1864, where he applied for transportation from St. Louis Missouri to Keokuk, Iowa for two adults and five children. States that he and his family are seeking a home among friends in Boone County, Iowa. This is last known record of Permelia, Rosanna, Edward, James and Rachel Landreth.

David Martin Landreth and his daughter Nancy "Nicey" Caroline Landreth did reach Boone County, however we do not know when. The next known record of David Martin is his marriage to his first cousin, Sarah Jane (Bass) McGuire on 11 August 1865 in Boone County, Iowa. Sarah was a Civil War widow with a young son and daughter, while David Martin has at least one child from his first marriage. His daughter, Nancy Caroline Landreth marries, Jacob Joshua Wisecup of Boone County on 13 June 1872 in Boone County, Iowa.

Both the David Martin Landreth and Jacob Wisecup families migrated westward to farm in Harrison County, Iowa in the mid 1870's. Both families locating in the Missouri Valley area. David Martin continued to farm and live in this area until between 1900 and 1904, when he moves with the family of his stepson, William McGuire to Little Rock, Lyon County, Iowa.

It is believed that he was buried in the Claremont Cemetery which is where his stepson, William E. McGuire was buried in 1926 even though David's burial record has not been found as of 1 August 2021.
