US Senator. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Michigan in the United States Senate from 1979 until 2015. To date, he is the longest serving senator from Michigan. Born into a Jewish family of political activists and attorneys, he studied at Swarthmore College from where he attained his Bachelor of Arts degree and later received he law degree from Harvard Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1959 and commenced practicing in the Detroit area. During the 1960s, he served as assistant attorney general and general council for the Michigan Civil Rights Division. He went on to serve as special assistant attorney general for Michigan and chief appellate defender for the City of Detroit. He initiated his political career when he was elected to and served in the Detroit City Council (1969 to 1978) and served as president from 1974 until 1977. He succeeded Robert P. Griffin in the United States Senate and during his tenure, Levin displayed liberal tendencies. He served as Chairman of the Committee on Armed Services and was a proponent for the autoworkers industry. His older brother Sander 'Sandy' Levin was a longtime member of the US House of Representatives. His nephew Andrew 'Andy' Levin was also elected to the US House of Representatives. Levin battled lung cancer during his last years.
