Oliver Hazard Perry Tanquary was a son of Abigail (née Painter) and Walter Tanquary, born on 12 March 1828 in Frederick County, Virginia, where his family farmed.*


Oliver Tanquary was swept up in the California Gold Rush. In 1852, he was a miner in El Dorado County, California. He turned to freight hauling in 1855, and in 1859 he became a merchant in Millville, Shasta County, California, forming a partnership with Henry Anklin. (Anklin & Tanquary was dissolved in 1867.†)


O. H. P. Tanquary and Mrs. Laura M. Barton (née Geer) were married on 8 April 1860 in Shasta County, where they both resided. The groom was age 32, single, born in Virginia. The bride was age 23, born in Ohio. A widow, she had married Livingston Barton in 1854 in Shasta County, and was the mother of Henry Barton. During the 1860s, the couple lived in Millville, where their first five children were born. He sold off his stock of merchandise there in 1869.


O. H. P. Tanquary relocated around 1 June 1870 to Chico, Butte County, California, where the couple had two more children. A local newspaper in 1872 carried ads for his grocery, and in the 1880 U.S. Census he was a miller. O. H. P. Tanquary died from tuberculosis at the age of 53 on 22 April 1881 in Chico.


His wife and children later moved to Sacramento, California, where she died in 1908.

Oliver H. P. Tanquary was admitted to the Stockton State Hospital, San Joaquin, California, on 8 May 1866. He was described as being: "Age 38 years; native of Virginia; Married and has three children the youngest one year old; was last from Ohio occupation merchant." The record concluded that the "cause of insanity [was] excessive use of liquor & tobacco." He was discharged on 6 September 1866.


O. H. P. Tanquary's institutionalization mentioned. "The victim has been long and favorably known to our business men, and citizens generally, as a good business man and worthy member of society." ("Insane," The Shasta Courier, Shasta, California, 12 May 1866, p. 2.)
