This is a cenotaph. Timothy Carpenter, Jr. travelled to California during the 1849 Gold Rush. He died in the mountains and his body was never recovered. A memorial, or cenotaph, was erected in his memory in the Carpenter Family Cemetery (Source for death in California: obituary of his daughter, Susan Carpenter McCarroll, The Wellington Leader, 3 Jun 1921).

4. TX: 1 Oct 1837, Received 2nd Class Certificate for 1280 acres of land from Texas General Land Office. He located and claimed 1280 acres near present day Dallas, TX, which was then in the Fannin Co. land dist. (land was disputed)

7. TX: Dallas, 4 Apr 1849, Timothy gave Power of Attorney to Aaron B. Wilson, his son-in-law, to "manage my estate until I return from California".

8. TX: Dallas, 9 Jan 1850, A. B. Wilson filed the Power of Attorney to stop trespassers from cutting timber on Carpenter land.

9. TX: Austin, 30 May 1853, Alcy Carpenter writes letter to Texas Land Office asking they "lift the location" of her husband's Headright Certificate for 1280 acres on Mountain Creek and 320 acres on Ten Mile Creek. She stated, "my husband is in California."

10. TX: Austin: 13 Oct 1854, Timothy Carpenter's attorney, J. M. Crockett, in a letter to the Texas Land Commission stated that the Old Carpenter land certificates had been "raised" and the 1280 acres relocated "out west." He further requested the land be patented to James Sharrock.

10. TX: Austin, 13 Feb 1855, 1280 acres was surveyed for Timothy Carpenter on Elizabeth Creek in Wise Co., TX. Land was granted on 14 Feb 1856.

11. TX: Fannin, Texas Land Title Abstracts, Texas General Land Office, Austin, TX. 13 Feb 1856-Carpenter, Timothy-1280 acres-Fannin Dist-Wise Co.-File 379, Pt. Vol. 4-Patent# 907-Cert. 51. Land surveyed on 22 Dec 1846 for Timothy Carpenter.

12. TX: Wise, Sep 1858, Alcy Carpenter sold 80 acres of land to George WEBB at the divide of Elizabeth Creek and the Trinity River, 13 miles of Decatur "stating that her husband was deceased." Deed filed and recorded 26 Sep 1859 (Wise Co., TX Deed Book C. p.102)

13. TX: Tarrant, 93 acres located 9 miles NE of Ft. Worth-issued to Timothy Carpenter Assignees, land was surveyed on 16 Sep 1868 for the "heirs of Timothy Carpenter, dec'd."
