John William Irwin, Sr

Knoxville - John William Irwin, Sr. was born to Homer Hays Irwin and Jessie Ione (Amos) Irwin; March 31, 1932 in Chicago Illinois. He passed away quietly at home on Sunday February 7, 2021. He was 88 years old.

John is preceded in death by both his parents

John enlisted in the Navy in 1951; honorably discharged in 1955. While in the service received the rating of END-2 and decorations of Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Ribbon, United Nations Medal along with Korean Service Medal. After the service he entered Purdue University and graduated in 1960 with a BA degree in engineering. For many years he worked at Western Electric Company at its Hawthorn Works division in Chicago, Illinois and later, in 1987, when it became AT&T, he then took an early retirement.

Early on, John was a Mason; very active in Boy Scouts and always active in his church. Most recently a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church where he was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus.

John came out of retirement in 2005 and took a job at Food City for the sole purpose of donating every paycheck to St. John Neumann to help pay for the new church. John really was an amazing example of how you should live your life. He was big hearted, loyal, kind, hard working, generous, intelligent, loving, fun, funny, selfless, modest, and a patriot. He is loved and missed greatly. May he rest in eternal heavenly peace

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 15 at St. John Neumann Church with Father Michael Maples celebrant. Service will be available online.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to St John Neumann Church.
