David Strouse was the fifth of eight children of John and Rebecca (McElhaney) Strouss. He moved with his family from Beaver County, Pennsylvania, first to Port Washington, Wisconsin about 1856, and later to Champaign County, Illinois about 1858. On 11 Aug 1862 he enlisted for service with Co. F, 125th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment and was mustered out as a corporal on 9 Jun 1865. On 31 Jan 1867, he married Sidney Savanah Brown, a native of Monroe County, Indiana in Champaign County, Illinois. Together, David and Savanah had five children: Sherman George, Sarah Alice, Rodney Scott, Oscar and Stella Viola. David occupied most of his life as a farmer near Maroa, Illinois.
