He joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 16 and served during the Vietnam War. After serving in the military, he worked for the Department of Defense as a civil service engineer at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, served as vice-president of Local 1922 AFGE. He was a former member of The Devil's Wood Yard Hunting Club, and a former member of the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Rose Anna Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Johnson; three daughters, Angela Johnson, Brandy Johnson, and Sherry Johnson - all of Savannah; son, Lewis L Johnson, Jr. of Meldrim; stepdaughter, Jennifer Osborne of Missouri; grandson, Julian C Smith, IV of Jacksonville, FL; granddaughter, Hope Jackson; two great-grandchildren, Cameron Osborne and Abree Osborne of Missouri; brother, Gene Johnson of Sandy Hook, KY; and three sisters, Edith McVey, Mary Snipes, and Sherry O'Neal - all of Sandy Hook, KY.
