Son of Catherine O'Neill and Michael Hurst, who both lived and died in Ireland. He was born in the parish of Islandeady. His mother appears to have had a farm in Drumminahaha. His mother died 17 Feb 1881 in Drumminahaha. His father Michael Hurst seems to have died in the 1840s or early 1850s as there are no records to indicate he was alive at the time of Griffiths valuation (1855) for the area of Drumminahaha. James had a sister Ellen (Hurst) Rice and a brother, Patrick Hurst. James immigrated to Dane County, Wisconsin in the early-to-mid 1860s and children of both Ellen Hurst Rice as well as Patrick Hurst both immigrated to the Chicago area in the 1870s and 1880s. Patrick's grandson Harry Hurst ended up in Wisconsin where he is also buried in Resurrection cemetery, and there is evidence that Harry and his descendants spent time with James and his descendants. These connections have been further verified using DNA testing.
