Mr. Alexander was born in Mauldin to the late William James Alexander, Jr. and Helen Evelyn Garret Alexander. He was a 1957 graduate of Mauldin High School and later became the first member of his family to graduate college, earning a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from the University of South Carolina in 1963. Bill was a registered Professional Engineer and held 43 Registered Patents to his credit. In 1976, he founded Alexander Machinery, Inc and ran the business until 2005. He was a lifelong member of Mauldin United Methodist Church. Bill was passionate about helping others, loved bird hunting, and "tinkering" in his spare time.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, William James "Jay" Alexander, IV with wife Robin; a daughter, Sharon Alexander Sullivan; four grandchildren, Leah Sullivan Ballard and husband Jared, Lindsey Nicole Sullivan, William James "Will" Alexander, V and Matthew James Alexander; four great-grandchildren, Rhett Ballard, Sloane Ballard, Ridge Ballard, and Gracie Sullivan.
