Alan Howell passed away peacefully on Friday, August 6th.
Horace Alan Howell was born on March 2, 1960, in Clarksdale Mississippi to Horace and Sarah Howell.
Like many young boys growing up in the Mississippi Delta, Alan found joy in the fun things of life one could only find in a small town in the 1960's and early 1970's. He would graduate from Clarksdale Lee Academy in 1978 after being an active member of the band. He would go on to attend Delta State University on a partial band scholarship.
Alan had many interests but especially in Aviation and Photography. He would go on to earn his private pilots license and for several years owned his own photography business in Clarksdale.
He would move to Memphis in the late 1980's where he was the Staff Photographer for the Memphis Business Journal for over 27 years. It was while he worked at the journal that he met the love of his life, Shirley.
His photographic skills were excellent and reflected the pride he took in his work. His freelance work included the UT Physicians Group and Memphis University School and numerous events throughout his entire career. Alan also volunteered his time as a photographer with the Piperton, Tennessee Fire Department.
He continued his interest in aviation where he would remain an active member of The Experimental Aircraft Association. One of Alan's favorite pursuits was researching and cherishing his father Horace's WWII service in the South Pacific as a Naval Aviator.
Alan fought a courageous battle over the last year with pancreatic cancer. Despite grueling and stressful treatments, he maintained a strong battle to the end. He will be missed by many friends throughout the area. Alan is survived by his wife, Shirley Scruggs Howell and several cousins.
The visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. until the graveside service at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 16, 2021 at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
