Jo'an Joyce Cole Angel, 88 of Idamay was welcomed into the arms of the Lord on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 surrounded by her husband Spencer and her children. Jo'an was born in Mannington on February 22, 1933, a daughter of the late George and Thelma Matthews Cole. Graduating from Mannington High School in the class of 1951, she was active in clubs, assemblies and enjoyed singing in the glee club. She was a member of the Mannington Church of Christ.

Somehow, in addition to raising seven children, Jo'an had a career working as a medical assistant with Dr. Frye in Mannington, was a manager of McCrory's Five & Ten in Mannington and the Middletown Mall, and worked several years at Fairmont General. In later years, she relocated to Tampa, Florida with her parents George and Thelma Cole. While in Tampa, she worked as a medical assistant for Dr. Dunsworth and was a manager at Joel & Jerry's department store.

She loved life, her birds and her grandchildren. Regardless of how she felt, she would always greet you with a wonderful smile when you walked through the door. Besides being a dedicated worker for her family, she was also creative. Some of her skills included knitting, crocheting, sewing and making clothes and garments of all types--even hats for some daughters' home economics class. She had a way with plants, growing a variety of beautiful flowers and plant. And talk about a sense of humor! She was everyone's cheerleader and a very compassionate person. It did not matter where a person came from or what their station in life was she would comment about how sorry she felt for those in need.

Jo'an was preceded in death by her parents; brother Dennis Cole; infant granddaughter Amanda Elliott; former husband Donald "Apaw" Elliott; son-in-law Dennis Tomana; stepdaughter Vicky Angel Burnside; niece Jeanie Cole Tintle; special friend Rebecca Roupe, and brother-in-law Robert Foxwell.

Survivors include her beloved husband and companion of more than thirty years, Spencer Angel of IdaMay and sister Patricia Cole Foxwell of Athens, Georgia. Jo'an leaves behind seven loving children and spouses LaDonna Elliott Tomana (and companion Charles Ashcraft) of Mannington, Thomas 'Jody' (Jessie) Elliott of Bridgeport, Deborah Elliott Spears (and companion Ron Wright) of Rachel, Rhonda Elliott and Brenda Elliott (Chet) Spencer both of Mannington, Joseph (Linda) Elliott of Four States, and Bryan Elliott (and companion Shari Freeman) of Rachel. Jo'an's stepchildren all reside in Ohio: Spencer R. (Dawn) Angel, Jr. of West Alexandria, Penny Buchanan and Frankie Angel of Camden, and Mary Lou Louden of Eaton.

"Mam' is survived by fourteen grandchildren: Lisa Spears, Matthew Elliott, Stephanie Spears, Tomana, Sam Floyd, Aja Tomana, C. Eric Spears, Seth Tomana Allyson Tomana, Aaron Elliott, Meghan Abbott Heaney, Crystal Spencer, Dalton Elliott, Jackie Curtis, and Ronda Curtis Ford; and more than more than twenty great- and great-great grandchildren: Travis, Becca, Leslee, and Rowan Hoy; Colin Elliott; Sophia and Lillian Tomana; Makayla Floyd; Layla, Vanessa, and Vincent Tomana; Thomas & Jerimiah Spears; Abigail Tomana; Chase and Elsie Ford; Noah Elliott; Issabelle, Molly, & Gunnar Heaney; and beloved cousin Diane Efaw Earl and nephew Martin Gregory.

Friends and family will be received from 2 to 8 pm Sunday, August 15th at the Hutson Funeral Home, 500 E Main St., Mannington. Dr. Michael Reese will officiate a Christian Celebration of Life at 11am on Monday, August 16th in the Hutson Chapel. Jo'an's grandsons will serve as pallbearers for interment at Mannington Memorial Park.
