A memorial service was held after lunch Tuesday, August 24, 2004, in the General Nutrition Center, Sulphur.
Mr. Collett died Thursday, August 19, 2004, in Oklahoma City.
Lawrence Gordon Collett was born on March 27, 1921, in Norman, Oklahoma. He is survived by his former wives, Berniece Collett, Norman, who is the mother of his children and LaVerna Saylor, Oklahoma City; five children Larry Collett, Fortuna, Missouri, Wilma Collett Rachal, Norman, Kenneth Collett, Norman, De Lynn Saylor, now in Iraq and Mary Beth Goodridge, Sulphur and two sisters, Alta Boston and Edna McMahon, both of Bethany. Mr. Collett was predeceased by his parents, John and Rosa Collett, brothers, Lorene, Roy, Marvin, Delbert, Dock and one sister, Esther James. Mr. Collett has 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Gordon volunteered to go into service (Navy-Seebees, the U.S. Navy construction battalions for building naval shore facilities in the combat zone at Eniwetok, Okinawa) as a machinist's mate/equipment operator, third class in April, 1945. Gordon received a Victory Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal while in the Navy.
Mr. Collett is a Norman High School graduate and attended the University of Oklahoma taking courses in police supervisory and criminology, and also Southwest Christian College in Dallas, Texas. He is a retired lieutenant with the Norman Police Department having worked there for 20 years. He was the first motorcycle policeman in Norman and the first policeman to purchase, train and utilize a police dog for service with the Norman Police Department.
Mr. Collett had been a resident of Sulphur for about 20 years.
