Obituary
RENEE JEAN COWEN
February 10th, 1960 - August 13, 2021

Renee Jean Cowen (Wilkins) was born to Chester and Dortha Wilkins on February 10, 1960, at St. John's Hospital, Tulsa, OK. Her early childhood was carefree with days spent playing outdoors with the group of neighborhood kids and cousins. There were always horses around that dad was "trading" on and Renee developed a great love for horses. She would barrel race, flag race, pole bend, and eventually even try goat tying. Goat tying was always a big laugh with memories of the meanest goat on earth that dad bought for her to practice on. Around 5th or 6th grade, Renee began playing basketball. It was something she enjoyed, and she was so proud when she was allowed to play up on the high school team. After her graduation at Berryhill High School in May 1978, she attended a year at Rogers State College. Beginning in 1980, she worked a couple of years for American Canvas as an office manager. She began working at A-1 Tent Rental as an office manager and crew manager around 1982. It was during this time that Renee found the love of her life and married Mike Cowen on January 11th. In June 1986, Renee and Mike welcomed their son, Michael. Renee was a wonderful mom. When you were around her, she was always ready with the latest update of what Michael was doing. Two of her greatest memories were of the trips she took with Michael when he was invited to play baseball with the People-to-People team and when Michael played football in the Oil Bowl game between Oklahoma and Texas high school players. She used to say that if she had lots of money, she would move to Hawaii and live on the island of Maui because she had enjoyed that trip so much. As Michael grew older, it seemed like her circle of motherhood became bigger. It seemed like all of Michael's friends thought of her as their second mom, and it was a good thing that her house was big because it was always full of Michael's friends.
A-1 Tent Rental sold in 2007 and Renee began work at the 71st and Union branch of American Heritage Bank and later she was moved to the Berryhill branch. She was truly a favorite with the customers there. In May 2011 Renee's world was devastated by the loss of her son, Michael, in a car wreck. As time went on, she used her loss as a means to minister to others going through the same loss by leading a Grief Share class. She never understood why Michael was taken, but she knew she would see him again and she wanted to share that hope with others going through that same dark valley.
After leaving the bank she worked as an office manager at Piping Enterprises for a short time and in 2019 she started as AR /AP Coordinator at Superior Pipeline Company. She was excited to work at the same company as her sister so they could eat lunch together just like old times at the tent rental she would say. After suffering a heart attack in July 2020, Renee worked and struggled so much to regain her independence and had regained her ability to walk with a cane. She was so proud that she had come so far back on her journey to renewed health. Due to a continued issue with a foot sore from her original hospital stay, she had to again enter the hospital in July 2021. On August 13, 2021, she went to be with her Lord and Savior. She is survived by her husband Mike Cowen, sister Stephanie David (Jeff), brother Kevin Wilkins, In laws Kenneth and Freda Cowen, brother-in-law Rusty Cowen (Linda), sister-in-law Shelly Perdue (Rick), and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents Chester and Dortha Wilkins (Barnes) and son Michael Ray Cowen, Jr.
Renee was such a people person. Once you entered her life, you didn't just leave when you wanted to. She would be sitting at lunch sometimes and would say, "Do you remember that girl that played guard at Cleveland?" or "You know Jeff that bought those fruit stand tents, did you know and then whatever she had heard about what he was doing" and I would have to say I don't remember that name or that person, but she knew who she was talking about and she kept up with them all. She knew the latest about people that she played basketball with, that she rodeoed with, that rented tents from the tent rental, that worked at the bank with her, Michael's friends. It just amazed me that she kept up with so many. She was that sunshine in so many people's lives. She loved to tell people about Jesus or stop and pray with them if she knew there was something for which they needed prayer. Renee was that truly beautiful person in our lives that was our wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, co-worker... she was our friend.
