In 1860, he lived in Bloomfield, Oakland County, Michigan with Permelia Carpenter, working as a farmer. He purchased land in Long Lake township, Grand Traverse County in 1865 and moved north in the next year or so. In 1870, Albert and Permelia lived there with Albert working as a farm laborer. He was living by himself in 1880.

Harley died on 3 July 1885 from "erysipelas": Harley Masters departed this life on the 3rd inst.; cause of death, erysipelas. His remains were interred at the head of the lake. Rev. O. G. Whitman officiated at the funeral. Mr. Masters deeded his property to E. V. Davis (Long Lake column, Grand Traverse Herald, 23 July 1885, page 6).
