Over 600 Pay Final Tribute At William Roth Funeral

Over 570 friends crowded the St. Paul's Lutheran Church and lawn Sunday afternoon when funeral services were held for Bill Roth, who passed away unexpectedly at the Veterans hospital in Minneapolis June 10. His death came as a great shock to his family and friends who were rejoicing over the fact that he was making good recovery from a diabetic ailment and a minor heart attack. At 1:04 p.m. he was stricken with a fatal heart attack. His family did not learn of his death until late afternoon.

William Frederick Roth was born September 17, 1895, at Brookings, S.D., to August and Dora Schmidt Roth. There he was baptized in infancy. After his mother passed away in 1910, he came to Minnesota and made his home with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kanning, in Fraser Township. In 1912 he was confirmed in the West Rutland Immanuel Lutheran Church.

In World War I, he served nine months in a machine gun company with the expeditionary forces of the 364th Infantry, 91st Division. Six months were spent overseas. On September 30, 1918, he was severely wounded in action at Meuse-Argonne when shrapnel tore through his right elbow, right leg, left hip, and his back. For 6 months he was hospitalized and emerged suffering a permanent disability. Only by persistent exercise did he regain use of his fingers.

Undaunted by his physical handicap, Bill went into partnership at Northrop with Art Koeritz in 1921. On June 25, 1922, he was united in marriage to Lucinda Senne. Rev. A. M. Beck performed the ceremony at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of West Rutland township.

In 1935, Mr. Roth sold his Northrop business interests to Mr. Koeritz and came to Truman to open the Roth Implement Company. The very next year the people of Truman chose this newcomer to head our town as its mayor. This he ably did for nine consecutive years. Mr. Roth was a faithful member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church. For seven years he served as its treasurer. In the church as in all things, he was generous, willing, cooperative, and capable.

In early May he was taken ill with pneumonia complicated by diabetes and a mild heart ailment. He was cared for at home for sometime; later he was removed to the Community hospital at Fairmont and then to the Veterans hospital where last Thursday he passed away.

Surviving Mr. Roth are his wife, Lucinda, his daughter Marilyn (Mrs. Richard Jesse) and sons, Bill, Jerry, and Dale; also his aged father August Roth, and his sister Mrs. Ted Schwieger.
