On August 24, 2021, A.J. Mason of Citronelle, Alabama, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family at the age of 84.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Sharon Waite Mason; his children, Rhonda Harrison (Phillip), Donna Parker (Johnny), and Jay Mason (Dana); nine grandchildren, Blake Lofton (P.J.), Mason Parker (Mallory), Austin Harrison, Jay David Mason, Hunter Mason (Courtney), Maggie Parker (Jarret), Andrew Harrison, Anna Kay Harrison, Ryleigh Mason; four great-grandchildren, Jailee, Libby Grace, Alexandria, and Wyatt. In addition, he is also survived by two brothers, Wilbert Mason (Sharon) and Bubba Mason (Judy); one beloved aunt, Myrtle "Tootie" Blount; and a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving grandson Madison Parker; great-grandson, John Ryan Parker; brother, Harold Mason; sister, Daleen Maples; and his loving parents, Albert Mason Sr. and Addie Turner Mason Byrd; and stepfather, Oliver Byrd.

A.J. lived a full life. He loved hunting, fishing, skiing, shrimping, and all types of ball. He played baseball, basketball and football in high school and played Defensive End at Jones Junior College where he graduated and received another scholarship to play for Arkansas but was called back home to work. When he returned, A.J. joined the Army Reserve and started working for Alabama Power Company where he worked for 42 years. A.J. also started giving back to his beloved city by coaching youth football and coached many young men in this town. He continued coaching until his son, Jay, started playing high school ball. In 1973, A.J. started fox hunting. He loved every second of it, once owning 50 head of hounds. A.J. never met a stranger. He was tough but had a heart of gold and loved feeding the community with his yearly garden. A.J. was a Christian and life-long Southern Baptist. He loved seeing his children and grandchildren grow up. He was proud of his family, and he thought God's greatest gift was his children. He was loved dearly and will be missed by all.

The family will receive friends from 10am until the 11am funeral service Friday, August 27, 2021, at Bethel Baptist Church with Bro. Johnny Tucker, Bro. John Blackwell, and Bro.
