Benjamin died in a terrible accident. While working on an Alabama highway, he fell into a vat of tar. He lived shortly after the accident. It was said after the accident he stayed at the home upstairs away from the children so they would not see the extent of his injuries. His wife was unable to care for the young children. They were spread throughout the family, some being adopted as children.
