Porter Loring Mortuary Obituary
Alvin Abelman, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed on October 31, 2021. Alvin was born on January 28, 1922 in San Antonio, Texas to Alex and Lena Abelman.

A student of San Antonio Independent School District, Alvin left high school to become a sheet-metal worker at Kelly (formerly Duncan) Air Force base during World War II. While stationed temporarily in Galveston, Texas, he met his loving wife of 70-years, Esther. In 1962, Alvin opened Beacon's clothing store on San Antonio's East Side, after spending years going door-to-door selling dry goods. Lovingly known as "Mr. Beacon," Alvin ran the store side-by-side with his son Arthur for more than 50-years. He focused the business on his relationship with customers, workers, neighbors, and passers-by, refusing over the years to open multiple locations or take-on loans. In 2003, Fox Tech High School honored Alvin with an honorary degree for his work in (and with) the community.

Alvin's passion was his family, sports, keeping-up with stocks and current events, as well as travel, which he did until he was 99. He was also a man of routine—whether twice weekly golf, Thursday lunches with the Romeos, family dinners, or walking in the mall and neighborhood with friends. He is remembered for his smile, calming demeanor and perspective, and shrewd business-sense. Alvin was an associate member and founder of Hadassah.

Alvin is preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Joseph Abelman; and son-in-law, Martin Gewertz. He is survived by his children, Roberta, Sharon and Arthur (Susan) Abelman; grandson, Nevin Gewertz (Jennifer Romig); and great-granddaughter, Martine; as well as numerous other relatives and his Beacon's family. Pallbearers will be Barry Brower, John Ballard, Jerome Cohen, Roger Ojeda, Nevin Gewertz, Ronnie Yambra. Honorary pallbearers are the the Romeo Lunch Group.

Special thanks to Alvin's doctors, including his cardiologist, Dr. Robert Schnitzler, and care-givers Maria Gonzales and her family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alvin's memory to Hadassah, Shriners Children's Hospital, Congregation Rodfei Sholom, or a charity of your choice.
