Donald D. Paige, age 82, of Fredericksburg, formerly of Orrville, died Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at Louis Stokes VA Medical Center in Cleveland, following a long period of declining health.
Don was born on July 13, 1939, in Tuppers Creek, Kanawha County, West Virginia, to the late Samuel D. and Athleen (Mason) Paige and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and made his home in the Orrville and Wayne County area since 1962.
In 1964, Don took on a ready made family, marrying Barbara Nibert Mark. He worked hard to- ~ Together again ~ -make a home for his new wife and her three children. Barbara died on March 1, 1994.
Don worked for the former Hagan Electronics (Westinghouse Corporation) in Orrville. In 1966, he was doing a tree removal in Massillon when the tree he was working on suddenly broke away, with Don falling, breaking his back and pinching the spinal cord. Against doctor's prognosis, Don taught himself to walk and returned to his job at Westinghouse for more than 20 years. This injury would haunt him for the rest of his life, eventually taking his legs among other afflictions. Don continued to get right back up and continued to walk until he could no longer muster the physical strength to do so. Even then, he continued to move about in his wheelchair. In his later years, Don made himself useful by driving the Amish.
He enjoyed hanging out with his Amish friends, doing puzzles, country music, fishing, hunting and watching sports and his Westerns.
Surviving are three children, Carl "Dean" (Debbie) Mark of Fredericksburg, Barbara J. (Joseph) Spencer-Arthur of Fredericksburg and David L. Mark of Peachland, NC; two half-brothers, David (Linda) Williams and Robert (Angel) Williams, both of WV; and a cousin, Debbie (Allen) Dodd of WV.
He was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Linda Mark.
Private graveside services will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville.
