Mr. Joseph Baxter Linney, age 81, of Wilkesboro died Sunday, March 26, 2006 at his home.

Mr. Linney was born January 13, 1925, in Wilkesboro the tenth child of Rev. W. E. Linney and Florence Poole Linney.

Mr. Linney graduated from Wilkesboro High School in 1943, where he played football under Coach Caldwell and basketball under Coach Jennings. During his senior year, he served as captain of both the football and basketball teams.

Following high school graduation, Joe joined the US Marines and after basic training spent two years on the USS Wasp, where he served as a marine gunner. His unit received the Presidential Citation during the Marshall Island campaign and the Captain's Letter of Commendation.

After discharge from the Marines, Joe enrolled at Appalachian State University (then Appalachian's State Teachers College) and graduated with a BS Degree in History and Physical Education in 1949.

In 1970, he received his master's degree in physical education from the same institution. Coach Linney began his career at Mountain View High School in 1950 and while there and later at North Wilkes High School, he amassed an enviable record of wins and set records that will remain unchallenged for years to come.

The gymnasium at North Wilkes High School is named in his honor. For nine summers in the late 1960's and early 1970's, Coach Linney served as golf pro at the Lockport Town and Country Club in Lockport, New York. In 1967, Coach Linney joined the staff at Wilkes Community College, where he coached basketball, tennis, and golf. He retired from Wilkes Community College in 1988.

Joe was a member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church, where he served as an usher. This was one of the many churches where his father served as pastor during his career.

Joe married Adelaide "Toni" Wright in 1945 and she was his most avid supporter in life, as well as athletics until her death in May of 1993.

Coach Linney was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Burial with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142, will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park.
