Barbara Gail Ellis Smith
DECEMBER 1, 1937 – SEPTEMBER 3, 2021

Barbara Gail Ellis Smith, 83, of Cartersville, went to be with Jesus on Friday morning, September 3, 2021. Gail was born in San Diego, California where her parents, Samuel Toliver Ellis and Lillie Mae Meadows Ellis, lived in military housing during Toliver's long career in the U.S. Navy. Over Gail's childhood years, before and during World War II, she and her mother lived at seaports in San Diego and New Orleans, and at times with the Meadows family in Calhoun and the Ellis family in Dalton. Once the War was over and Toliver retired from the Navy, they established their home in Dalton where Gail had the benefit of close relationships with grandparents and a multitude of Aunts and Uncles. She was a city-girl and attended public schools in Dalton, graduating from Dalton High School in 1955. After graduation, Gail enrolled at West Georgia College in Carrolton to study for secretarial work. After her first year, she wasn't particularly fond of college life or her curriculum and was unsure what to do for the next term. Toward the end of that summer, she met a handsome country-boy, named Lee Smith, at Head's pool in Dalton and he asked her for a date. That first date was followed by several others until they were married 3 months later, on October 5, 1956. The couple moved to Chamblee while Lee finished college. When he graduated in 1958, they moved back to Dalton where they bought a small house and had 3 children while Lee worked for the Georgia Highway Department. When Lee completed his 4-year training period and passed his test to become a Registered Land Surveyor, they moved to Cartersville in July of 1962. The Smith family soon joined Tabernacle Baptist Church where Gail served in the WMU and as a Junior-Girls Sunday School teacher while being a busy stay-at-home mother. In 1974, she accepted the position as the Director of the Tabernacle Kindergarten and enjoyed serving there until 1980. She had always had a great artistic talent and in 1980 she decided to pursue that passion. She enrolled in art classes at Kennesaw College and was exposed to different painting styles, types and media. She found that she loved watercolors, particularly still-lifes and portraits. Over the years she painted portraits of many Bartow County folks and won many awards for her still-life paintings. When Lee retired from surveying work in 1999, they enjoyed several long trips in their GMC motor home, seeing many areas of the USA. Gail stopped painting around 2005 when her eyesight became too poor, but she stayed busy with Lee and her love of gardening. Although she is now reunited with Lee in the presence of her Lord and Savior, her absence will leave a huge hole in the lives of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends.

Gail was preceded in death by A. Lee Smith, her husband of almost 64 years; her parents, and an infant sister. She is survived by three children and their spouses, Michael and Chris Smith, Susie and Ron Woodward and Sharon and Scott Mauldin; nine grandchildren and spouses, Matthew and Teri Smith, Andrew and Rachael Smith, Thomas Smith, Stephen Smith, Lauren and Matt Cason, Joshua and Molly Woodward, Seth and Tiffany Mauldin, Caleb Mauldin and Levi and Kristen Mauldin; eleven great-grandchildren; her brother Sam Ellis of Cedar Bluff Alabama; her brother-in-law Bill and Shellie Smith of Cartersville; and sister-in-law Gena Smith of Dalton.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at Tabernacle Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at the Church.

Serving as pallbearers will be Matthew Smith, Andrew Smith, Thomas Smith, Stephen Smith, Seth Mauldin, Caleb Mauldin, Levi Mauldin, Matt Cason and Joshua Woodward (in absentia).
