Berrien Springs - Dorothy (nee Welsh) Brown, 77, of Berrien Springs passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, Feb. 16, 2005, at her home.

Dorothy's life began on Jan. 24, 1928, in Muskegon, Mich., the first daughter of Roy Clayton and Frances (Hutchinson) Welsh, both who preceded her in death.

After graduating from Muskegon Central High School, Dorothy entered Western Michigan College to study Occupational Therapy, while at Western, she joined the Alpha Beta Epsilon Sorority, which she continued with the Roe Chapter for many, many years after graduating. And, she met her future husband through a roommate.

On June 6, 1953, Dorothy married Gerald P. "Jerry" Brown of Benton Harbor, at the Central Methodist Church in Muskegon. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Berrien Springs to begin their lives. Together they raised five children, traveled around the U. S. together or camping with their children, and eventually, in 1970, they began Oronoko Lakes Recreation on their farm.

Dorothy enjoyed many hobbies during her life - sewing, baking, knitting, reading, and most of all genealogy. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Berrien Springs.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Jerry; daughter Kathleen F. and Erin D. "Dee" Lott and their children, Brandon E., Michelle K. (of Kenosha, Wis.), and Kristine F. of Berrien Springs; daughter, Barbara A. and Joseph G. Kienzle of St. Joseph, and her son, Gerald R. Gowacki of Milwaukee, Wis.; daughter Laura L. Cowart of Berrien Springs an her children, Bryon O. of Berrien Springs and Kayla L. of South Bend; daughter Suzanne M. (now serving with the U. S. Army) and Steven A. Haskins of Seaside N.J., with her sons, Dustin K., Alexander and Benjamin Brown, Steve's son, Christopher S. and their sons Dillon A. and Bryce G. Haskins; son Daniel D. and Kathleen A. (nee Northrop), with their children Mallory M. and David P. Brown of Berrien Springs.

Also surviving are her sisters and spouses - Helen and Clifford Vallliencourt of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Marion and Lyman Van Winkle of Flint, Mich.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial gathering at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy's name to your favorite charity, to Hospice of Berrien County, or to the Alzheimers Association. Allred Funeral Home of Berrien Springs has been entrusted with arrangements.
