Townley died piloting Stirling III, LK453 of 1654 HCU, based at RAF Wigsley. On return from night bombing practice they were advised to circle to await an improvement in visibility. Whilst doing so the aircraft lost control and crashed about 1 ml N of the airfield at 0110, killing all on board.Stirling lll LK453 1654 HCU
The Aircraft took off at 22:30 from Wigsley for night bombing practice. On return the visability was worse and they were advised to circle and wait weather improvement.
The Stirling went out of control on doing so and crashed North of the airfield. All were killed and taken to their home towns for burial.
