Townley died piloting Stirling III, LK453 of 1654 HCU, based at RAF Wigsley. On return from night bombing practice they were advised to circle to await an improvement in visibility. The Stirling went out of control on doing so and crashed North of the airfield. All were killed and taken to their home towns for burial.
