J. Darlene Smith, 82, of Scipio, passed away at 2:30 A.M. on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at her residence. She was born on June 10, 1939 in Indianapolis, the daughter of Homer and Jean (Milholland) Hines.
She lived the majority of her life in Scipio and was a 1957 graduate of North Vernon High School. She enjoyed being a homemaker and farmer's wife. She had been a teacher's assistant at Learning Seeds Pre-School and was a member of the Scipio Methodist Church.
Darlene enjoyed gardening, cooking for her family and spending time with her grandchildren and spending special times and having adventures with her sisters. She enjoyed country music and Nashville, TN was a favorite vacation spot.
She married Harry E. Smith in Scipio, on February 22, 1959 and he survives. Other survivors include her daughters, Deanna (Patrick) Ross of North Vernon and Dodie (Jay) Smith of Columbus; sisters, Sheryll (Francis) Smallwood of Elizabethtown, Anita (Jim) Galyen of Scipio and Sandy (Tom) Smith of North Vernon; grandchildren, Lauren (Adam) Megel and Kristen (Matt) Hurley both of Columbus, Josh Ford of Bloomington, Austin Smith of Indianapolis and Cassidy (Adam) Duell of Greensburg; great grandchildren, Abigail Megel, Madelyn Megel, Emmaline Megel and Grant Hurley.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Rev. Sarah Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at Scipio Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, September 12, 2021 from 12:00 P.M. until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
We ask visitors to follow social distancing guidelines inside the funeral home and masks are recommended. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
