Sarah was born on May 26, 1842 in Jefferson County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Joseph L. W. Earhart and Nancy Rutledge. She was married to Thomas M. Mathews in Jefferson County on August 28, 1859. A son, John was born to them on August 5, 1867. Thomas must have died in Jefferson County, before 1870, because the 1870 Census has been diligently searched for Thomas or Sarah Mathews, to no avail. One interesting entry was found, however. Sarah had a younger brother named Charles, who would have been 20 in 1870. In Marion Township, Jennings County, that year, there is a record of a Charles Earhart, 20, Farmer, b. Indiana. Listed with him are Sarah Earhart, 27 & John Earhart, 2, both b. Indiana. Apparently, this is what happened. Thomas Matthews died between 1867 and 1870. Sarah and her son John then went to live with her younger brother, Charles. In 1870, the census taker assumed they were man and wife, and listed them as a family with the last name Earhart.

On September 16, 1875, Sarah married David H. Wilson in Jefferson County. Sarah and David had three sons, Benjamin Irwin, Marion and Charles, and must have lived in Jefferson County until 1883 or later. They moved to Rantoul, Champaign County, Illinois sometime after 1883. Sarah died in Rantoul on November 17, 1927 and she is buried in the Maplewood Cemetery in Rantoul. David lived until 1939.
