Mrs. Phillips' Rites Conducted - Mrs. Esther Byers Phillips of 4201 Massachusetts Ave., Washington, D.C., widow of the Rev. Rozelle James Phillips, former pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church, died Wednesday at her home after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Rear Adm and Mrs David Smith. The Smith family were direct descendants of Capt. Daniel Saunders, a founder of Salem, Mass. Mrs. Phillips lived in the Salem area more than 60 years. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was formerly deaconess of St Johns Episcopal Church of LaFayette Square, Washington, D C. She was in charge of St. John's Rest House there during World War I. Surviving are her son Rear Adm, Richard H Phillips of River House, Army and Navy Drive, Arlington, Va ; a daughter, Mrs. Jesse C. Sowell of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Private services and burial in Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, were yesterday.
