Obituary

Shaftsbury, VT – It is with great sadness we report that after a long and valiant effort to conquer Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, Matthew passed away Sept. 8, 2021 at Albany Medical Center surrounded by family. His passing was swift and relatively painless. He died with the same brave dignity that he lived. Matthew is the most amazing person we have ever known, and he will be missed by many. He was loved always and will continue to be loved forever...
From his birth on May 8, 1999, Matthew David Asher Hoag brought a gentle sweetness, mild humor, great joy, and abundant love to our world.
Matthew's best friend was his father David whom he spent many hours with working on cars and talking about sports. Their favorite teams were the NY Giants, Mets and Yankees. Other close friends included Ashdin Schaefer, Tyler Ripley, Jake Volpi, and Kyle Willard, among others. He also nurtured special relationships with each of his three older sisters and their children. His oldest sister, Amanda Hoag, and her husband Alain live in Bath, Maine with Matthew's four nieces: Amelia, Anda, Azminah, and Amarah. Erica (Hoag) Moyo and her husband Claremont live in Cary, NC with Matthew's niece, Olivia. His youngest sister and best buddy, Nicole Hoag, and her wife, Melissa Kees, live in Latham, NY with their four children: Matthew's three nieces, Sophia, Addie, Arianna, and his only nephew, Owen Matthew. Although Matthew was never married and had no children of his own, he was a real family man. Matthew shared the whole of his life with his beloved parents, David and Robin (Potter) Hoag. He was his family's Greatest Joy!
Matthew grew up surrounded by a large extended family which includes his maternal grandfather, Lyman Potter Jr. of Pownal, VT, who likes the Red Sox and Patriots. This sparked some good-hearted ribbing about which teams were better. He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother Jean (Harrington) Potter and paternal grandparents Raymond and Dorothy (Dunham) Hoag. He is survived by maternal aunts and uncles: Jim (Kelley) Potter, Ted (Lynne) Potter, Vicky (Randy Novotny) Potter, Sue (Peter) Pochop, Tony Potter, Brenda (Sam Piper) Phillips, Justin (Mary) Potter, and Loretta (Chris) Snyder. His paternal aunts and uncles include Judy (David) Mello, Jeanne Northrop, Rob Hoag. He was predeceased by his paternal uncles, Alan Hoag, Pete Hoag, and Bradley Northrop and paternal aunts Ann Hoag and Deb Hoag, as well as his maternal aunt and former daycare provider, Tammy Potter. Matthew has numerous cousins who loved him deeply and will miss his gentle smile and quiet humor and well as his advice about fixing cars.
He attended Shaftsbury Elementary School and did the "Truffle Shuffle" at his 6th grade graduation to the amusement and surprise of many, given his quiet nature. He graduated from Mt. Anthony Union High School in 2017 with numerous awards and honors from the CDC. His time with Tom Haskins in the automotive program at the CDC led him to earn a degree in Automotive Technologies from Hudson Valley Community College where he was on the Dean's list and President's list.
Matthew was a hard worker. He was employed at Windylea Farms since high school, learning the thoroughbred business, literally, from the ground up. He was well respected and admired by those he worked with and worked for. He had a true passion for the horse business. He simultaneously worked on vehicles with Carl Fowler until Carl's passing just a few months ago. Matthew continued to assist Mrs. Fowler in finishing some of Carl's projects and helping her with yardwork. He was always willing to help others even before they asked. This was Matthew's calling. To care for others with humble integrity was his nature.
While we all agree he was taken much too young, he accomplished much in his short time on earth. We were truly blessed to have been entrusted with is care and to have been shown by his example what true humility looks like.
Services will be held Sunday September 19, 2021 at 3pm at Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington, VT.
Visitation will take place prior to the service from 1pm-3pm.
The family plans to honor his memory with an automotive scholarship in his name. If you wish to donate to this scholarship through Mahar Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201: please make checks payable to: Matthew Hoag with Scholarship Fund in the memo line.
