8199 Privat E B M Murray, 2nd Battalion the Gordon Highlanders. The Battalion was one of the four infantry battalions which, along with three cavalry regiments and three batteries of artillery, were despatched from India to Natal in Sep 1899 and were deployed to Ladysmith. They fought at the battle of Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899 (32 killed and 91 wounded). They were part of the garrison in Ladysmith throughout the siege and during the great attack on 6 Jan 1900 the battalion reinforced Caesar's Camp and helped repel the Boer attackers (18 killed and 32 wounded). After the recuperation period following the relief of Ladysmith, the battalion was part of the advance north into the Transvaal. Private Murray died of wounds at Rooikoppies, near Amersfoort, Transvaal. He was buried at Amersfoort. His remains were later reinterred at Volksrust. He is also commemorated on the Gordon Highlanders Boer War memorial on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, Edinburgh, Scotland (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/251858).
