John Preston Austin was born in Norwich, New London, Connecticut. He was the major of the 9th Confederate Calvary unit which was guarding Confederate President Jefferson Davis at the time of his capture. Maj Austin married Amanda Willson, daughter of a prominent businessman in Madison, GA on 2/23/1868. The Austins had Three children: Susan Austin, Leroy Willson Austin, and Samuel Yates Austin. Per his request, Col Austin is buried next to a close Calvary friend in the Confederate Cemetery in La Grange, GA.
