Returning to Italy in August 1938 he was sent to attend the Air Force Application School in Florence, and at the end of the course he entered effective permanent service. When Italy entered the war on 10 June 1940, the 70th Fighter Squadron, 23rd Group, 3rd Terrestrial Fighter Wing, stationed at the Turin-Mirafiori airport and equipped with fighters, was in service Fiat CR42 Falco. On December 16, together with his unit, he was transferred to Italian Northern Africa and was promoted to lieutenant on the 30th of the same month.
