Donald Gene ‘Red' Sowders

Oct. 10, 1948 – Nov. 29, 2007

Donald Gene "Red" Sowders, 59, Converse, died at 10:20 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at River View Hospital, Noblesville. He was born Oct. 10, 1948, in Tipton, the son of Elmer V. and Sue H. (Greathouse) Sowders. He married Saundra (Adamson) Myers, and she survives.

"Red" was a 1967 graduate of Tipton High School. In 2002, after 35 years of service, he retired from DaimlerChrysler, where he was employed at the transmission plant.

He attended Converse Church of Christ and was an active member of the Moose Lodge #1590 and the Sons of the American Legion, both in Tipton. He loved to play cards and visit the beaches although his passion was fishing, both freshwater and saltwater. He was an avid fan of NASCAR. In keeping with his generous spirit, he was an organ donor so that others may enjoy life.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Saundra, are his mother, Sue H. Book; one daughter, Wendy R. Sowders; two grandchildren, Ashley M. Sowders and Levi A. Sowders; a brother, Victor A. Sowders and his wife, Vicki; one sister, Mary Lee Mitchell and her husband, Raymond, all of Tipton; a half sister, Tammie Sowders, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

He was preceded in death by his father; one son, Todd A. Sowders; and one brother, Larry Joe Sowders.

A memorial service celebrating Red's life will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hasler-Stout Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown, with Rob Schwarze officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7:30 p.m. with the service immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions may be made to The ARDS Research in care of the MAYO Foundation, 200 First St. Southwest, Rochester, Minnesota, Mooseheart or to the American Cancer Society, with envelopes available at the funeral home or may be made online. Condolences may be sent online to www.hasler-stout.com.
