HERMAN FRANK 'AL' ALVORD

Retired CU-Boulder employee Herman Frank "Al" Alvord of human resources died on Oct. 6 in Boulder. He was 87.

Mr. Alvord was born on July 27, 1916, in Coin, Iowa, the son of Bert C. Alvord and Minnie Mae Stamper Alvord. He married Hazel Virginia McCart in Longmont on Aug. 6, 1943.

He graduated from Pueblo Centennial High School in 1935. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1939 from the University of Colorado, and did graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a radar officer, and served with the 551 Signal Air Warning Battalion in the Philippines. He also was commander of a radar site in Florida. His active duty ended in 1946, and he received an honorable discharge from the Army Reserves in 1950.

Mr. Alvord worked as superintendent of industrial relations at Colorado Fuel and Iron in Pueblo and Buffalo, N.Y., from 1941 to 1971. He moved to Boulder in 1962 from Buffalo. He retired as director of industrial engineering for CF&I Corp. in Denver in 1971.

In 1972, Mr. Alvord joined CU-Boulder as personnel director for all four CU campuses, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. He also was a member of the CU Alumni Board and Director's Club. He was a member of the engineering council for three years, and in September 1988 was awarded a President's Citation for extraordinary efforts in the advancement of CU.

In addition, Mr. Alvord served for 20 years on the Boulder County Board for RSVP, and was staff director of the group's advisory board.

He was known by colleagues as a consummate gentleman, who was patient and polite. "I will remember him as one of my first mentors," said Bill Herbstreit, UCB executive director of budget and finance. "He was very interested in helping me in my first true management position at the university and shared his time and advice willingly."

Mr. Alvord is survived by his wife of Boulder and numerous friends and colleagues.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Faerie Glynn.

A memorial service was held on Oct. 10 at First Presbyterian Church in Boulder.

Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Colorado Engineering Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1140, Boulder, CO 80306.
