Note: This is a very old stone that was originally carved with the initials "W. E. A." , probably by a family member according to WILLIAM'S granddaughters, EDITH ALLDREDGE ARMSTRONG and GRACE ALLDREDGE LEWIS. Also, there is anecdotal evidence that WILLIAM might have been born in Wake Co, NC.

WILLIAM was the son of ANNA WOOD and JAMES ALLDREDGE/ALDRIDGE. His middle name may have been Eagleton or Ezekiel but speculation varies depending on which line of descendants you talk to.

On 9 August 1849 he married MARTHA JANE "MOLLIE" JOHN in Carroll, Hendricks Co., IN. They later moved to Gentry County, MO for about 6 years but lived longest in the tiny town of Nevada (pronounced ne-VAY-da) in Story County, Iowa. There WILLIAM and MARTHA JANE seemed to settle in, with WILLIAM being elected twice as a justice of the peace and working as the postmaster.

Oral history claims the family also sang professionally, which probably means they performed at weddings, funerals, and patriotic functions. Newspaper accounts show that five of his six adult sons continued to perform as the Alldredge Quintet for many years in Oregon City and Portland, OR.

With their sons and several daughters-in-law (daughter MARY and her husband GEORGE BOYLAN had gone ahead the previous year by train) they migrated west to Oregon City, Clackamas Co., OR as part of a wagon train, the main part of which started out from Valonia, Decatur Co., KS. The ALLDREDGES left from their home in Nevada, Iowa and joined the rest of the group along the Platte River in Nebraska.

This group was captained by A.F. Surfus. A diary account kept by MARY MATILDA SURFUS is on file at the Clackamas County Historical Museum's genealogy room in Oregon City, OR. A version collected by her daughter and granddaughters is available from the University of Nebraska Press as part of their multi-volume Covered Wagon Women series.

MARTHA is listed twice on the 1850 census. She and her husband WILLIAM are found on the following censuses as adults:

1850 - 10 Sept in Jackson Twnshp., Carroll Co, IN (still listed with her parents at age 19 under her maiden name of JOHN)
1850 - 7 Sept in Rock Creek and Washington Twnshps., Carroll Co, IN (age 19 and married to William ALLDREDGE)
1860 - 9 July in Nevada, Story Co, IA
1870 - 9 Aug in Jackson Twnshp., Gentry Co, MO
1880 -
1900 - 16 June in Oregon City, Clackamas Co, OR

Given the times they were probably farmers, but it appears that they acquired a fairly large house upon arrival in Oregon City, which MARTHA used to house her unmarried adult sons as her boarders after the death of WILLIAM. MARTHA, WILLIAM, their known children minus one, and most of their children's spouses are all buried in Mountain View cemetery, Oregon City, OR.

Their known children:

1) Mary Elizabeth "Molly", b. 29 July 1850 in Carroll Co., IN. D. 9 Feb 1932 in Ardenwald, Clackamas Co., OR.
Husband: George Washington Boylan.

2) Chaney Pleasant Alldredge, b. 1853. D. 1868 in Maxwell, Story Co., Iowa. Chaney is buried in Pleasant Run cemetery, Story Co., Iowa.

3) Joseph William Alldredge, b. 25 Dec 1855 in Maxwell, Story Co., Iowa.
D. 25 Feb 1941 in Oregon City, Clackamas Co., OR.
Wife: Rebecca "Becky" Tomlinson.

4) Alonzo Oscar Alldredge, b. 7 May 1858 in Maxwell, Story Co., Iowa. D. 25 Jan 1920 in Oregon City, Clackamas Co., OR.
Wife: (1) Eliza Boylan

5) William "Will" Wesley Alldredge, b. 29 Aug 1863 in Maxwell, Story Co., Iowa. D. 17 Jan 1939 in Oregon City, Clackamas Co., OR.
Wife: Bertrice Harriet Randall.

6) Reuben Rudolph Alldredge, b. 17 Nov 1865 in Nevada, Story Co., Iowa. D. 2 Nov 1939 in Battle Ground, Clark Co., WA.
Wife: Nella McClellan.

7) John Pleasant Alldredge, b. 15 Oct 1869 in King City, Gentry Co., MO. D. 11 May 1924 in Oregon City, Clackamas Co., OR.
Wife: Flora Adeline Marrs.

8) Frank James Alldredge, b. 24 Sept 1876 in King City, Gentry Co., MO. D. 14 Oct 1943 in Oregon City, Clackamas Co., OR.
Wife 1: Charlotte "Lottie" Bell Myers
Wife 2: Bessie P. Crawford.

Military Service: WILLIAM'S military service is unknown. He would have been 35 at the start of the Civil War and still eligible for service, but outside of the regular armies, farm families often decided among themselves which members could best be spared for fighting. Usually this was an unmarried son rather than the head of a family.

In the listings of the National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors, there are no William Aldridges/Alldredges of the right age who served from Iowa, where WILLIAM was living by 1860. Three William Aldridges served from Indiana with the Union army, one in a cavalry unit, one in an infantry unit, and one in an artillery unit.

Some non-official accounts (which all appear to be derived from an unsourced family group sheet in an Oregon City archive) list a Willis Alldredge as firstborn. No other record has been found of such a person. Except for CHANEY, all of these Alldredges are buried in Mountain View cemetery.
