Nawal Abdallah (nee Yammine) - 1950-2021

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Nawal Abdallah (nee Yammine), 71, of Charlottetown.

Nawal is survived by her husband of 45 years, Maroun; her children, Ghada (Curt Basher), Shadi, and Rayan (Laura Grant); grandchildren, Pierre, Francis, and Marcel; her siblings Marie (Edward Daher), Leila, Milad, Fouad and Pierre (Roula Jabbour), and many nieces, nephews, and their children. She also leaves behind many cousins and friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Jirgi and Salimeh; brother Adnan, and sister Daad (late George Rashed).

Nawal was born in Hasbaya Lebanon in 1950. She was an exceptional student who attended an English Protestant school on scholarship. In order to support her family, she left school early to work as a senior secretary for Bechtel Corporation. In 1976, after a 5-year courtship, she married Maroun in the midst of the Lebanese civil war. They went on their honeymoon to Canada and chose to stay, making Charlottetown their home.

In Canada, at 27 years old, and pregnant with her first child, Nawal attended Colonel Gray High School to get her high school degree. She was always working to learn and was very determined. Nawal was an avid reader, who liked to collect costume jewelry, and taught herself to sew.

Nawal and Maroun's life revolved around their family and home, and Nawal loved cooking, hosting, and gathering family and friends for dinners and parties. Nawal and Maroun founded Cedar's Eatery, and operated it for 35 years. Many friendships were born at the restaurant, and it became a second home.

Nawal's approach to life was inspirational; she believed in making the most of every moment, using up everything and not saving anything for later. She was incredibly loving, kind, generous and supportive. She was quiet, an amazing listener and had great wisdom, which she shared with family and friends who often sought her counsel. She encouraged her children to have fun and to take advantage of the opportunities she never had. Nawal was the matriarch of all those she considered family and was the center of the family's social circle, pulling people together to celebrate life and each other.

In recent years, Nawal had been living with cancer. Her challenges were immense, but her perspective and strength were beyond match. We aspire to be like her. Nawal was the light of our lives.

We wish to extend our deepest gratitude to the numerous doctors, nurses and caregivers at Home Care PEI, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, QEII in Halifax and Mount Sinai in Toronto for the excellent and compassionate care that they provided.

Nawal's wake will be held at Hennessey Cutcliffe Funeral Home on Monday, September 20th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. by invitation with COVID-19 restrictions in place. Funeral mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer on Tuesday, September 21st at 1:00 p.m. by invitation with interment to follow in the Roman Catholic Cemetery.
