José of Braganza (in Portuguese: José de Bragança; Lisbon, September 8, 1720 – Lisbon, July 31, 1801) was an illegitimate son of King João V of Portugal, from a relationship he maintained with a nun, Paula Teresa da Silva e Almeida, later known as Madre Paula de Odivelas, being the third of the so-called Meninos de Palhavã (Palhavã boys). He was the High-Inquisitor of the Portuguese Inquisition from 1758 to 1760. In that year, for having been insolent with the Marquis of Pombal, he was, together with his brother António, another Palhavã boy, exiled by King José I to Buçaco, only returning to Lisbon in 1777, after the king's death and subsequent accession to the throne of Queen Maria I.
