Azariel and his brother Abner Blanchard served Revolutionary War as members of The Green Mountain Boys - a militia organization first established in 1770 in the territory between the British provinces of New York and New Hampshire. The Green Mountain Boys immediately joined the Revolution and on May 10, 1775, fewer than a hundred of them, under the joint command of Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold, helped capture Fort Ticonderoga from the British. At the Battle of Bennington, the Green Mountain Boys fought with the American troops to beat the British. Eventually they became part of the Continental Army and served in Vermont in an abortive offensive against Canada. One unsourced report lists Azariel as having risen to the rank of Lt. Co. Azariel's name is inscribed on a DAR boulder listing the soldiers who served from Cortland County, located in the Courthouse Park.
