Mrs John Ruthven
One of Almonte's oldest residents, Mrs John Ruthven, was laid rest Sunday afternoon. The funeral was held from the home of her son-in-law Alex McDonald Sr., Ottawa street, and interment was in the Auld Kirk cemetery. Rev A.J. Fowlie of the Presbyterian church officiated at the funeral services. The pallbearers were her son-in-law, Alex McDonald, Sr.; and five grandsons, Thomas McDonald, Hamilton; Alex and Ruthven McDonald, Brantford; Arthur McDonald, Toronto, and John of town. The late Mrs Ruthven, who was in her 87th year, came to Canada 25 years ago and made her home with her son-in- law, Alex McDonald. She was better known to her many friends as "Granny" Ruthven. She never changed from her Scottish dialect and enjoyed conversations with anyone from Scotland. To the last she held firmly to her old Scottish customs. She was a member of Bethany United church. Born in Scotland, the daughter of the late James Hunter and his wife, Jennie Burrell of Berwickshire, Scotland, Agnes Hunter was predeceased by her husband, John Ruthven, some 60 years ago. Surviving here are one daughter, Mrs Alex McDonald Sr., of Almonte, and one son, Robert Ruthven of Baloch, Loch Lomond, Scotland. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
