MANISTEE - A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, to celebrate the life of Susanna Capper Edgar. The service will be at 1 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Manistee with the Rev. Everett Kline officiating. All are welcome to join the family at the service and the reception following the service.

Susanna died peacefully in her home in Manistee on Sept. 16, 2016, with her dear friend Dean Franklin by her side.

Susanna was born on Oct. 5, 1941, in Manistee and was the youngest child of Holland and Thelma Capper, long-time Manistee residents and teachers.

After graduating from Manistee High School in 1959, Susanna attended Albion College and graduated with a Bachelor's in English in 1963. In 1965 she received her master's degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan. While at the university, she met and fell in love with Neal Edgar, himself a doctoral candidate in library science. Susanna moved to New York City where she was employed by the New York City Department of Education as a children's librarian.

After Neal completed his PhD program in 1966, he and Susanna were married in New York City and then moved to Kent, Ohio, where Neal was employed by Kent State University Library. While in Kent, Susanna worked as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher. After Neal died in 1983, Susanna remained in Kent until she chose to move back to Manistee in order to be helpful to her aging parents.

Susanna loved to read throughout her entire life. Her close friends remember always turning to Susanna for advice on the best new book to read. Susanna loved to sing, and she sang in the choir all through high school and, up to just weeks before she died, she sang with her family around the dinner table.

With the help of her friends Nancy Bedell and Dean Franklin, Susanna discovered her love of exploring the world through her computer and spent hours on the internet researching her latest interests, be it the Orthodox Church and their traditions or cross-stitch patterns. Susanna also loved to do Sudoku puzzles and she enjoyed her community of friends at Harbor View Apartments. She was a constant student of history and a source of all things historical for her family long before Google existed. She knew everything there was to know about every English king and queen or about the different calendars used throughout time. She also acted as the family's expert on our own ancestry and had an encyclopedic memory of exact birth dates and names of long-forgotten ancestors. Susanna loved spending time with her family and friends and she enjoyed a good laugh. She maintained her great sense of humor and her bravery until the very end of her life.

All of us who love Susanna owe a great debt of gratitude to Dean Franklin for his proactive and unswerving service to Susanna as her friend, her nurse, her confidante, her protector, her adviser and supporter. Susanna was able to die in dignity in her own home entirely because of Dean, and for that we will be forever thankful.

Susanna is survived by her sister, Mary Capper Stewart, of Seattle, Wash.; and her brother, Holland (Cap) Capper and sister-in-law Bee Capper, of Onekama; her nieces, Jean, Lizanne, Kathryn and Rachel; her nephews, Holland (Cappy), John, Mark and Nathan; her dear friends, Dean, Dayna and Megan Franklin, Carol Voigt, Nancy (Lenz) Bedell and other Albion College friends; and many grand-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Neal Edgar; her brother, John Capper; and her parents, Holland and Thelma.
