Frances Parmer Alwinger July 8, 1923 - Nov. 25, 2017 Frances Phyllis (Parmer) Alwinger was born to George Weninger and Margaret Schumacker July 8, 1923 in Aberdeen, S.D., and passed away peacefully Nov. 25, 2017 after suffering a stroke at the family Thanksgiving. Frances graduated from Ipswich High School in South Dakota in 1941 and then joined her sisters in Portland. Frances loved to bake, and was famous among those who knew her for her pies, cookies, and other baked goods. Throughout her life she showed her love of others by baking for family, friends, neighbors, and her church community, where she served as a member of the Altar Society at St. Therese Church. Frances had a natural aptitude for organization and worked as an administrative secretary for the Portland Public Schools and David Douglas School District for 30 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the American Business Women's Association for 32 years and during her retirement volunteered at Portland Adventist Hospital, modeling the "use it or lose it" mentality that kept her strong into her 90's. Frances had an unexpected sense of comedic timing and an ability to speak her mind. She passed on a sense of independence and self-sufficiency to her daughter and granddaughter. Frances married her first husband, Herman Parmer in 1942. The couple divorced in 1954 and Herman Parmer died in 1961. Their oldest son, Ronald Parmer died in a motor vehicle accident in 1966. Frances married Leonard Alwinger June 25, 1966. They shared a love of dancing and they retired together at the Summerplace Community until Leonard's death in 2006. Frances then joined The Stafford in Lake Oswego, near her family. She is survived by a daughter, Diane Desylvia Homes; son-in-law, Randy Homes; granddaughter, Rian Rhoe Bornling; great-grandson, Hugo Bornling; sister, Beatrice Griffith; nieces, nephews, and friends. The family will host a celebration of life Dec. 2, 2017, in West Linn, as well as a tea in memory of Frances for the residents of The Stafford at 3 p.m., Nov. 29, 2017
