BOY FOUND HANGED - Coventry Evening Telegraph - 17th May 1955

A Nuneaton boy who was found hanging from a rope may have been copying a trapeze artist, his father told the Coroner, Mr. C. W. Iliffe, at an inquest at Nuneaton today.
Mr. John Raymond Bacon, of 85, Coleshill Road, Chapel End, Nuneaton, said he went to look for his son, David Henry John, when he did not come home for lunch last Saturday. On going into the warehouse at the back of his shop in Abbey Street, Nuneaton, he found the boy hanging by a piece of tarred rope which children had often played with. It was attached to some racks.
Mr. Bacon said that David had a vivid imagination and was high spirited. He would try anything once and may have been copying a trapeze artist. P.C. Couper, the coroner's officer said the boy may have been trying out an experiment. He had put some cloth inside the noose so that the rope would not hurt.
Chief Inspector Dorridge told the coroner there was nothing in the boy's background at home, among his friends, or at school to suggest that he intended doing what he did. Dr. E. N. Trounson said death was due to asphyxia. Recording a verdict of "Death by misadventure," the coroner said it was inconceivable that a boy of eleven would take his own life.
