WILSON Graveside services for L. Bryce Hughes, 90, longtime Oklahoma City resident, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at Hewitt Cemetery, Wilson. An Army chaplain from Fort Sill will officiate.

Largus Bryce was born in Marion County, Ala. in Feb. 5, 1917, to Obe and Mamie Howell Hughes, and became an Oklahoman at age four when Obe and his brothers went to work for the Texas Company in the Carter County oil fields.

When Bryce wasn't shooting squirrels, swimming in the bayou and otherwise running wild with his brothers, he was made to hoe the cotton patch and attend school. He attended Wilson High School where he was a football, basketball and track star. On Dec. 8, 1941, he went to Ardmore to enlist in the Army Air Corps. A member of the 96th Squadron of the 82nd Fighter Group, he was a crew chief on a P-38 Lockheed Lightning crew and saw action in Italy and North Africa. After the war, he worked at Tinker Air Force Base as an industrial engineering efficiency expert.

He married Claudia Bess Brookes and together they raised their children, Sharman, Patricia and Linda, to understand the value of family. Bryce had a profound influence on his six grandchildren, Eva Foster, Adam, Alexis and Daniel Lincoln, Lauren and John Barghols. With Paw Paw there was always fishing, wiener roasts and ice cream. There was always climbing up Isinglass Hill, exploring the ruins of Ambrose Ward school and getting a malt at the Wilson drug store. There was always a bag of change to be split six ways, and there was always a Paw Paw at games, birthdays, Christmas and, well, there was just always Paw Paw. Where there was Paw Paw there was comfort. He could grow pecans. He could make it rain pecans. He taught all of us how to hoe a row of cotton, even when it was too hot to go on.

Bryce is a father, grandfather and teacher. He is a gentleman. Honest, fair and inspiring. He showed us all how to work hard and how to "man up."

Bryce was preceded in death by his wife, Claudia Bess Brookes; his parents; his brothers, Drennen and Hollis Hughes; and sister, Ortice Singley.

He is survived by his wife, Margo; his daughters, Sharman, Patty and Linda; his grandchildren, Eva Foster and husband, Jeremy Corff, Adam, Alexis and Daniel Lincoln, Lauren and John Barghols, and great-grandson, Dylan Bryce Lincoln.

Bearers will be Jeremy Corff, Adam Lincoln, Jon Barghols and Daniel Lincoln.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, 3131 N. MacArthur Blvd., Ste. 106B, Oklahoma City, OK 73122-1097.

Alexander Funeral Home will direct services. Condolences can be sent to alexanderfuneralhome.org.
